He was one of the Allied prisoners of war in a POW camp in North Borneo (Red Cross), having been transferred there from Singapore as a part of the British Forces. They had been transported from Shangai on July 18, 1942. Private Gillespie died as a prisoner of the Japanese.  On Australia War Memorial.
